AM Announcements - October 22

AM Announcements
October 22, 2008

1. Today is Day 42

.2. It is the mission of Speas Elementary School to provide its students with the tools necessary to successfully meet the challenges they will face in a diverse world.

3. Calendar items for this week:

Quarter Testing - Reading

Friday: October 24

4. We had 5 parents show up for "Meet the Principal. Each had different questions and we were able to provide them some clear answers. All in all it went well for the first time. We had 14 students here for tutoring and 9 tutors so that went well also. I want to "Thank" Gina Brown for working behind the counter at McDonalds last night. When I left we had 6 staff members there. I hope most of you had an opportunity to come by and support your school. If not, please put the third Tuesday of the month on your calendar so you can be there.

5. At the end of each day please take the following steps:
a. Turn off your TV
b. Log off your computers but do not shut them down
c. Turn off all monitors

6. It seems strange to keep placing this note in AM Announcements, but we have many people who still haven't responded. We need every one's support if we are to do all the wonderful things we depend on Social Committee for. Remember it benefits everyone, those who pay and those who don't. Dues are $25 and can be paid in a single payment, or installments throughout the year. See Ms. Johnson to work out payment of your dues.

7. The Junior League Puppet Show for third grade students is normally held in the media center. Due to the new floor, the media center will not be available and the puppet show will be held in the gym. Ms. Alston will move any classes she is teaching outside.

8. Mr. McCann, our Colonial Penn representative, will be here to discuss the flexible benefits plan and other policies tomorrow. Please be sure to sign up to talk with him. The sheets are on the lounge door.

9. Pennies for Patients drive is extended until Friday, October 24.

10. The deadline for AR benchmarks has been extended to this Friday. Make sure you turn yours in Ms. Fussell. You can place them in her box.

11. I have a WS/FCS Staff Policy Committee meeting today and will be off-campus after 3:30.

11. This week we begin quarter testing. Please be aware of the schedule. If your grade level has not sent in a listing of how you want to use Title-1 teacher to assist you in K-2 literacy or math assessment, please do so today.

12. Yesterday evening I received an e-mail from Toni Bigham that a nationally known expert in "bullying" would be available to meet with students here on Friday. I agreed to host him and develop a schedule. She is sending the particulars and I will publish a schedule as soon as I have them. His name is Tony Bartoli and he is the gentleman who was featured in the Journal yesterday. This is very special and we are fortunate to have this opportunity.

13. All bus riders for #175 should be seated on the grass outside the cafeteria. The bus has been getting here early and we need to go ahead and load the bus.

14. I want to publically thank Ms. Falor for her work on the Marzano strategies. She willingly took on the task of attending the 9 days of training at the end of last year, knowing that it meant she would then have to present her findings to her peers in a series of workshops. "Thanks" don't seem to be enough to compensate her for all her time and effort.

15. The whole world is in revolt. Soon there will be only five Kings left--the King of England, the King of Spades, The King of Clubs, the King of Hearts, and the King of Diamonds.
King Farouk of Egypt (1920 - 1965), 1948

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?
James Thurber (1894 - 1961), New Yorker cartoon caption, June 5, 1937

There is not any memory with less satisfaction than the memory of some temptation we resisted.
James Branch Cabell (1879 - 1958)
