August 28, 2008
1. When Spanish classes for grades 3-5 occur in the morning, those classes will be held in the teacher's classroom.
2. As we approach the end of each school day there are two things to remember. 1. Teaching (instructional or informational) goes on in the classroom until 2:20; No classes leave for the buses or the gym until the 2:20 bell rings.
There is a focus in WS/FCS on the utilization of all available instruction time during the day. Instructional support personnel from WS/FCS, Title-1 and WS/FCS Administration are visiting schools to ensure that we are making the most of the time we are given. It is our responsibility to our students to get the most out of what we are given.
3. It is very wet outside. We will see how things dry our before attempting the first fire drill. It may be after we complete lunch. Kindergarten teachers should take time to explain what a fire drill is to their students so that they are not scared when the alarm goes off. Teachers should also remind their students of the need to remain quiet throughout.
4. If you have not practiced your tornado evacuation procedure please do so today. As we saw yesterday, there is need for it in September just as there is in March-May. The last two years we have had tornado warnings in September that required us implement our plans. Fortunately both occurred at the end of the day during or after dismissal.

Pre-K Information - First 3 Days
The Pre-k students will also start 8/25 (Staggered in on 8/25 and 8/26 from 8-11am with LAP3 testing from 11-3 on those days as well). All Pre-k students will attend on 8/27 from 7:40-2:10 Also they will not be served lunch until Wednesday because we MUST have lunch forms on each student and they didn't arrive until Friday.
Teachers should go through all their new Social Studies materials. Using the list that was sent to them by Mrs. Marston they should make sure they have enough student textbooks, Teacher's Editions and all ancillary materials that were listed on the sheet. If a teacher does not have something then they need to notify Mrs. Marston immediately. This is a new adoption and we need to make sure we have all materials and enough materials. If we are missing things then now is the time to let Central Office know. We do not want to be short of materials in a new adoption. Please check carefully.

4. We ask that you keep Laura Young and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Laura taught Spanish here at Speas prior to her retirement. She is a close friend of Ms. Fussell and has volunteered here on a number of occasions. Her grandson, Matthew Gfeller, was the young football player injured Friday evening in the Reynold’s v. Page game. He has been declared brain dead and, as of Sunday afternoon, was on life support at Baptist Hospital. This is truly a tragedy for Laura’s family, the Reynold’s school family and for our school system.
5. Remind your students and parents that because of the Labor Day Holiday, there is no school next Monday, September 1. Classified staff members qualify for an hour of released time prior to the holiday. Our classified staff voted two years ago to take the time in two ½ hour increments on the two days prior to the holiday. Therefore, classified staff members are to leave at 3:00 PM on Thursday and Friday.
6. Magnet Express bus students will board from the gym as they did last year. Central Office and HR have placed surplus personnel in the positions of monitoring Express Bus Stops in the morning and afternoon. No local personnel will be used this year. Our new individual is Mr. Morris Hart who was an EC bus assistant last year. He will be with us each day from 6:30-8:30 AM and 2:45-6:00 PM.
7. There will be brief staff meeting in the media center at 2:45 to determine is there are any issues we must resolve before school opens Tuesday morning. If there are none, we’ll dismiss immediately.
8. As many of you are aware we have been dealing with Indoor Air Quality issues in the media center and the second grade hallway. We have had a number individuals from maintenance here attempting to work out a solution. We ask your patience as we resolve this issue.
