October 28, 2009

1. Today is Day 46.

2. It is the mission of Speas Elementary School to provide its students with the tools necessary to successfully meet the challenges they will face in a diverse world.

3. Calendar items for this week:

Wednesday: October 28
First Quarter EOQ testing ends
Dollar Dress Down Day
Shirley Rhyne with LLI at Speas - 8:00-10:00
Fifth Grade Pen Pal project gathering - Media Center - 1:00-2:00
LWS Education Committee meets with Dr. Simington - 2:00-3:00 - Reichert 0ff-campus

Thursday: October 29
RC -Day - Staff members are responsible for attending any Central Office staff development planned for them. Please refer to schedule.

Friday: October 30
RS day - Certified/Classified staff members may take annual leave if they choose.

4. Upcoming Calendar Items:

5. There appears to be confusion about October 29 and October 30:

a. On 10/29 - Certified and Classified staff members are expected to attend central office staff development if it is planned for them. If none is planned for you then you MAY take annual leave.

b. On 10/30 - Certified and Classified staff members MAY take annual leave, however they are not required to do so. It is their choice.On these two days, everyone is welcome to work if they would like to. No one is required to take the time off.

If you are still unclear about what you can or can't do, please see me to review it with you.

6. If your children sit at a given table or in the Honey Pot Cafe, please make certain that the tables are cleaned and the floor is swept when your class departs. Right now this is not happening and subsequent classes must clean up before they can sit down to eat.

7. Have you made your United Way pledge? We are so close to our goal. Won't you help put us over the top? Everything depends on you.

8. Student Council Information:
* The Student Council will be collecting items each month for Samaritan Ministries. If you would like to contribute there will be a box in room 3. This months items are: Sugar, Soap (Sample Size), or Disposable Razors.

* Thanksgiving Can Food Drive Begins: Monday, November 9, 2009 - Friday, November 13, 2009 - Please take a look at the flyer that is going home on Monday to see what items your grade level will be collecting.

* Student Council has a Nursing Home Visit on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

9. Please remind your students that we change to Eastern Standard Time at 2:00 AM on Sunday morning. Parents should set all clocks back one hour before they go to bed on Saturday night. All schools and buses will operate on Eastern Standard Time on Monday, November 02.

10. At the staff development yesterday afternoon, November's Make It, Take It night was moved from Tuesday, November 11 to Thursday November 13. The master Calendar has been changed to reflect this.

11. A CD of Veterans Day activities has been placed in the media center. Please check with Ms. Childers if you would like to use it as we approach Veterans Day on November 11.

12. Shirley Rhyne will be here this morning from 8:00-10:00. She will be meeting with Ms. Billingsley regarding our implementation of LLI. She is a teacher from Wilmington and provided the LLI training this summer. If you would like to meet with her she will be in room 16.

13.

14. The Pen Pal Orientation gathering will take place this afternoon at 1:00 in the media center.

15. I will be off campus this afternoon from 1:45-3:15 at a LWS Education Committee meeting with Dr. Ken Simington at Central Office.
