1. Today is Day 42.

2. It is the mission of Speas Elementary School to provide its students with the tools necessary to successfully meet the challenges they will face in a diverse world.

3. Calendar items for this week:

Thursday: October 22
First Quarter testing begins
Dental Screening - AM - Grades PK, K, 3, 5, and EC - gym
SmartBoard Workshop - Badarin
Curriculum Coordinators' meeting - 11:30-3:00 - Marston off-campus
Elementary Assistant Principals' meeting - 9:30-12:30 - Powell off-campus

Friday: October 23
Zone 5/6 Advisory Committee Meeting - Cook Elementary - Reichert and Clodfelter off campus
Rhonda Fleming visits Speas - 9:30-10:30 - Powell and Reichert
First Quarter testing - Reading - grades 3-5

4. Upcoming Calendar Items:
a. 10/27 - Staff Development - Marzano
b. 10/28 - First Quarter ends
c. 10/29 - RC Day - No School
d. 10/30 - RS Day - No School

6. Remember that Dental Screening is today for Pre-K, K, 3, 5 and EC. Please follow Ms. Powell's schedule

7. We are in the home stretch of our United Way drive with only $284 to go! Thanks in advance for considering a contribution.

8. Please remind your students during National School Bus Safety week about:
1). Bus Stop Safety
2). Proper Conduct on School Buses
3). "Bottoms to Bottoms, Backs to Backs and Book bags in laps."

9. We have switched the HVAC system over to heat. As a result, the temperatures outside climbed and now everyone is calling for air conditioning. We try to keep everyone comfortable, but sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate.

10. Ms. Rhodes laminates each Wednesday. Please arrange your lamination needs around that schedule.

11. The following are minutes from the Student Council Meeting:

a. The students are working towards purchasing classroom playground equipment for outside. The goal is to raise $1,600.00 so far we have raised $237.00 with $1,163.00 to go.

b. Car Wash and Yard Sale raised: $237.00 which went towards the classroom equipment.

c. Dollar Dress Down Money in October will go toward the classroom equipment.

d. Starbucks Coffee Sale: October 23, 2009 money will go toward the classroom equipment.

e. Thanksgiving Can Food Drive: Monday, November 9, 2009 - Friday, November 13, 2009
K- Can Vegetables; 1st - Dry Goods (Cereal, Boxed Mac & Cheese, Boxed Rice); 2nd - Can Fruit; 3rd - Canned Meat & Vegetables; 4th - Jelly, Peanut Butter, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo; 5th - Boxed Cake Mix, Pancake Mix, Syrup, Muffin Mix etc....; Pre- K - Boxed Mac & Cheese, Box Mash Potato's, Boxed Rice

f. Holiday Sleepover - Friday, December 11, 2009 - Cost $25.00 per child or an early bird special for $20.00. All proceeds going to the classroom playground equipment.
