7. The following are Nancy Martin's comments on her classroom walk-through's yesterday:
Thank you for letting me come to Speas this morning to conduct Teachscape Walkthroughs. I tried to visit classrooms I had not visited before, but did end up in some of the same rooms. I hope the teachers didn't mind. I think I visited every grade level and went into 8 classrooms.
I saw both math and language arts lessons during my visit. Most of the activities were teacher-led, but I did also see students both working independently and in small groups. Every student was on task and I did not see any inappropriate behaviors in any of the classes. That shows that students are very comfortable and engaged. It was good to see one of the teachers using the ActiveBoard. She seemed very comfortable with the new technology. What a bonus to the classroom! One teacher was reviewing the math quarter test. Students were correcting problems they had missed. The students had many questions for the teacher, but I see this as a way to help them have ownership of their test results. Thank you again for letting me come. I plan to visit again sometime in April.
8. If anyone asks you about registering for Kindergarten, remind them that beginning this year, children must turn five (5) on or before August 31.
9. Ms. Powell, Ms. Clodfelter and Mr. Tuttle will be off-campus for the next two (2) days participating in NCI training at the central office.
10. It appears that the ON/OFF for the TV's are now working. Please leave your TV's on at the end of the day.
11. We have placed two of the five WFU education interns. I still need three teachers who would enjoy having someone work with them for the Spring semester. They will observe 2 hours per week for 10 weeks for a total of 2o hours. if we want to get more interns in the future, we need to use these now. Please send me an e-mail this morning if you want an intern.
12. I am still in need of individuals who would like to assist with tutoring in the afternoons on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The pay is $25 for certified, $17 for classified, and $22 for classified with a master's degree. Please see me today or tomorrow if you are interested.
13. The refreshments on Tuesday were courtesy of Ms. Cathy Smith, a retired teacher who volunteers here. It was her birthday. Those we received yesterday were from Lewisville United Methodist Church.

7. The family of Justin Davis had a fire last Sunday caused by a faulty water heater in his room. All of his clothes and toys were ruined. Also, his bunk beds were burnt, as well as bed linens. Right now the family is in a motel courtesy of the Red Cross. They will be there for another week and then will be moving in with a friend until the house is repaired. Justin's room had the most damage, but most of the items in the house have severe smoke damage. Right now the family needs clothing for the children. The sizes are as follows:
Jarrod - 9th grade at Mt Tabor age 14 sizes 32/30 pants, shirt- large men's
Justin - size 16 pants, lg boy's shirt, size 6 men's shoes
A baby girl - 18 months --size 24 months to 2T
The family lost their TV and could use any household items once they get back in the house. Also they will need sheets, comforters and Justin will need a new bed, mattress and bed linens. If anyone has anything to donate, used or new, please let Cyndy or Vicki know and they will coordinate it and get it to the family.
8. If anyone asks you about registering for Kindergarten, remind them that beginning this year, children must turn five (5) on or before August 31.
9. Those individuals who attended the Redeemer Presbyterian Church Education Symposium should present documentation of attendance to Dr. Reichert so that it can be sent in for credit to HR.
10. It appears that Despite Carla Miller's best efforts, the TV's are still not being turned on and off automatically. Unless otherwise directed. Please turn your TV's off at the end of the day. We'll keep trying. I know Carla has put in a lot of effort on our behalf to get this working and we appreciate it.
11. We now have four WFU education interns who will be with us for the spring semester. Their names are Margaret Little, Cara Phillips, Kelly Erb and Laura Underwood. They will each be assigned to one teacher and must observe 2 hours per week for 10 weeks for a total of 2o hours. If you would like to have an intern, please send me an e-mail so we can consider you. So far I have one volunteer. I am looking for three more.

8. Individuals wishing to donate Annual Leave (AL) days to Rose Rusch may pick up the form from Ms. Higgins. We need to send these in as a group. We will be sending them in today.
9. The "Books Are Fun" order is to be delivered today.
10. Title-1 teachers should remember to assist the grade levels they have been assigned to once their testing responsibilities are completed. This will continue for the remainder of the week.
11. Remember that March 30 is now a student day. This was to be the first day of Spring Break. Should we have another snow day, March 31 will also be made a student day. Since concerns have been expressed regarding the use of Personal Leave I wanted to clarify in advance its application to March 30 (student day) and March 31 (RC day) in advance. The following is excerpted from General Statute § 115C-302.1.
(d). Personal leave may be used only upon the authorization of the teacher's immediate supervisor. A teacher shall not take personal leave on the first day the teacher is required to report for the school year, on a required teacher workday, on days scheduled for State testing, or on the day before or the day after a holiday or scheduled vacation day, unless the request is approved by the principal.
I hope this helps you as you as you try to plan ahead.
12. We have told the staff on numerous occasions that no one is to do anything with the copier in the HIVE other than add paper. It appears that we have an individual or individuals who believe that they know better. As a result, we have had the paper drawer forced back into the copier and broken; the gears damaged from improperly clearing paper jams; and acetate sheets fused to the heating rollers and left with no notification of a problem. Now someone decided to empty the toner without calling for assistance. In so doing, they dumped it in the trash can and improperly placed the used toner receptacle in the copier. The toner then went everywhere because it could not go where it was supposed to. This will only be stated one time: All service on the copier is to be performed by office personnel only. This includes clearing paper jams, changing toner, and service of any kind. There is no reason for staff members to open the copier. That should be left to office personnel. The next incidence of damage to the copier caused by staff members who do not wish to follow a simple rule will result in the copier being removed from the HIVE. The office will deal with the problem as expeditiously as possible, but understand that you may have to wait for service.
13. The question has arisen as to taking children outside when it is cold. We have no guidelines regarding a specific temperature the way we do when it is over 90 degrees. Children can quickly become dehydrated; suffer from heat exhaustion; or heat stroke. We know that severe cold weather can cause hypothermia and frostbite, but that requires temperatures well below zero or exposure to cold for a prolonged period of time. Our outdoor PE periods are really not a matter of concern. Should the forecast include low temperatures that could cause illness, injusry or death, we will notify classes to remain indoors.
14.It is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light, and certainly not desirable, as one's hat keeps blowing off.
