8. Let me take a moment to thank all of you for yesterday afternoon. It is truly hard to believe that I stood up in front of my first class of 31 second and third graders 42 years ago. It has all gone too quickly. I truly envy all of you who have the unique opportunity to work with children and spend your days teaching. There is no more enjoyable job in the world than teaching. We are blessed with this opportunity. I have been asked on several occasions since I announced my retirement about what my legacy will be. I don't think about things in those terms. Our legacies ride school buses; eat lunches in the cafeteria; are often too loud; and make us smile with the off the wall things they say. They will act throughout their lives often times unknowingly on what they have learned from us. It may be in the way they love their children; the work ethic they possess on the job; or how they care for their aging parents. Our legacy is eternal. The following is the final stanza of a poem I love called "The Quilting Bee." The poem uses the making of a quilt as a metaphor for the building of relationships between individuals.
Front porch music, quill-plucked dulcimer music,
fiddle, bow, and banjo music hung in tulip poplars and lowland gums.
The patterned music of generations past clung to the quilting stiches,
as they formed intricate patterns.
Stitches as invisible to the glance as sixteenth notes to the ear,
binding fabric and friends.
Having little to give as wealth, each shared self,
and, in the giving became posterity’s remembrance beyond generations,
where names are forgotten but deeds remembered.
8. I will be off campus between 1:30 and 2:30 today at a Dr's. appointment.
9. I'm not worried about the bullet with my name on it... just the thousands out there marked 'Occupant.'

This information may be found on the administrators' portal in the K2 Assessment Folder. If you have questions, please contact Janie Costello or Velvet Simington. The link to the K-2 Warehouse may be found on the teachers' portal on the right hand side, labeled K2 Assessment Data Collection.
6. Friday is the late arrival/early release day for classified staff members before the Memorial Day holiday. Classified staff members who arrive at 7:15 may arrive at 7:30 and leave at 2:30.
7. This afternoon will be the first of two Web Page Migration to School Wires workshops. It will run from 2:45-4:00. There will be a second tomorrow. All teachers must attend one so they can move their web pages over. The contract with our currect web host expires at the end of June and you will lose everything unless it has been moved to the new site. This is not a difficult process but you need to know how to do it. If you can't attend today, please plan of being there tomorrow.

5. The NCWISE web site has been down all weekend for maintenance so I have been unable to secure the pool of names of students who were enrolled at Speas for 140 days. Once I have done that I can get a picture of our performance regarding AYP in Math and Reading. I did a review of our scores last year and our proficiency numbers for the first administration. Last year, after the 2nd administration, we were 69.9% proficient in Math and 54% proficient in Reading. Currently, after the first administration, we are 63% proficient in Math and 45% proficient in Reading. This 45% does not include the 9 students in grades 3 and 5 who were 1 standard error from Level III. A couple more correct answers on the retest and they will be proficient as well. It appears that we are positioned well to make AYP in reading since we have already reached the 45% level in proficiency. While we have to remove those students who were not enrolled for 140 days, we also have the results of the second administration to add. Math will require diligence but we have 17 students who were 1SE and need only another correct answer or two to be proficient. Getting out of school improvement is within our grasp. We have got to make our students understand this and give their all June 1-4.

Thanks also to all of you who administered, proctored, or worked alone without your right hands so we could use assistants for testing. It was a long week and we get to do it on a slightly smalled scale June 1-4.

5. The SIT team and K-1 teachers placed the decision to purchase Imagine It for K-1 in my hands yesterday. The discussion was lengthy and many opinions were shared. This was prompted by the fact that we were the only Title-1 school (tiered or non-tiered) that determined not to participate. Sit members can provide you with the full text of the information I presented to them and what precipitated my bringing it back up when SIT had determined not purchased. As a result of their decision and the feelings expressed by K-1 teachers, I have placed the purchase of Imagine It in our prioritized Title-1 plan and will be submitting a purchase order today.
6. Don't forget to turn in your pledge card for the UNCF drive. The current total is $740.00. Remember that the drive ends today.
7. The School Board met last night to discuss budget concerns. This meeting was an attempt to deal with the gulf that exists between the School Board and the County Commissioners regarding school funding. The School Board requested an increase of $600,000 over last year. The County Commissioners countered with a reduction of $4,000,000 from last year's allocation. At this time, according to Fitch Rating Service, the County has approximately $129,000,000 in reserve in fund balance. The commissioners do not seem to be inclined to touch this "rainy day" fund. The following additional cuts discussed last night amounted to approximately $4 million. These were the elimination of elementary foreign language; elimination of all local assistant positions; reduction in theme budgets from $35,000 to $20,000 for all elementary schools; elimination of funding for the WS Symphony and related travel expenses; charging students a fee to play inter-scholastic sports; and reducing the supplement paid to sponsors and coaches since all these items are funded with local money from county taxes. Together these would save approximately $4 million. The commissioners will reconsider the board's request at a meeting on Monday night at 6:00 PM.

9. This has been a long stressful week. Try to get out of here quickly this afternoon.
10. We will most likely receive testing results tomorrow if our data is clean. At the latest it will be Monday morning at 7:30. Once the information is know we will divide the students into groups and begin remediation. We need everyone to be flexible next week. Student performance for AYP and for Gateways is dependent on the first two administrations so those who will go through the remediation process can still help themselves and the school. Results from the first administration are the only scores used to calculate growth by the state.

b. To continue to fund the Technology Coordinator's position as a Certified position using Theme money.
c. To maintain funding for the 3.2 positions using a combination of Title-1 funds and other allocations.
Be sure to talk with your representative and check out the minutes on the Shared Volume.
8. The following information was sent to Curriculum Coordinators, Assistant Principals and Principals last night around 9:00 PM. It came from Charlene Davis, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education. It may directly impact some of the decisions SIT made in the previous paragraph:
If you have been keeping up with the news, you may be aware that there will be further budget cuts. The theme budgets may be cut to $20,000 for each school and foreign language may be cut completely. We will keep you informed as changes are made.
Should these cuts become reality, it would almost certainly mean that we would lose personnel through the surplus process or non renewal of contracts. The number would be dependent on the specific amount of the cuts. It would also mean that there would be shifting of positions in order to place the appropriate people in the remaining positions.
9. If you have not completed the survey from WSSU regarding Gang Activity please do it today before you go home. This is a system-wide survey. Thanks in advance for your response.

This is valuable information for SIT. As noted above we may have to make a number of unanticipated changes and we need the opinions of all staff members.

Please remember the following:
A. Staff members, whether administrators or proctors, should turn off all cell phones and they should remain off until the test is complete and the materials have been turned in to Ms. Marston.
B. All materials on walls must be covered and/or taken down
C. Both the administrator and proctor must be circulating throughout the entire room continuously during the test
D. Administrators and proctors cannot bring food, drinks, books or magazines to eat/read during the administration of the test
E. Students with accommodations must be monitored to determine if they are, in fact, using the accommodations. The results of their monitoring must be entered on the Accommodation Monitoring forms for each student.
F. NCDPI and the WS/FCS Testing and Accountability Department will be conducting audits in the schools to ensure that testing is being done according to the manual. Therefore, do not deviate from the manual.
G. Make sure that when you write the time you begin testing; the duration of the test; and the times for breaks and/or the end of the test are clearly visible to the students and from the door to your classroom. We check these times throughout the test and need to be able to see them clearly from the door. Please check your time calculations. Every test day, we have at least one room that lists an incorrect time on the board and either gives too much or too little time which must be corrected.
H. When in doubt ASK. We want to avoid testing irregularities and misadministrations. Therefore, ASK before you act.

4. Well, today begins the process that the entire year has pointed to. You have all worked hard and supported our students. Now they have to stand on their own feet and show what they know. There is nothing you can do this weekend, so take some time for yourself and relax. Monday begins the actual testing. Know that you have done your best. I did a sweep of all testing rooms this morning and found just a few things. Remove all essential questions; problems you've worked out on the board; items on bulletin boards that have anything to do with reading, math, or science (fifth only). If you are in doubt, take it down today before school. I'll sweep again looking for the specific thing I noted.

3. Upcoming Calendar Items:
a. 05/17-05/21 - EOG Testing
b. 05/24 - Interim Reports go home
c. 05/24-05/28 - Remediation Period for Level I/II students
d. 05/25 - Web Page migration session to School Wires
e. 05/26 - Web Page migration session to School Wires
f. 05/28 - Dollar Dress Down Day
g. 05/28 - Box Tops for Education due
h. 05/31 - Memorial Day - No School
5. I solicited information from Dr. Sheehan and Dr. Costello yesterday regarding the Imagine It program. It appears that I was confused regarding which schools were involved. Dr. Martin did not mention in his presentation that this program was only for Title-1 schools and therefore I assumed that it was for all elementary schools. At the point where he made the announcement, however, only Title-1 principals were in the room. The program is mandatory for all Tier I and II schools. Speas is a Tier III school. It is not required that we purchase it, even though it is recommended. If we purchase it, it will further reduce the money we have available for personnel to 1.1 positions down from 1.65. If we don't purchase it our students, both entering from other schools and departing for other schools will be a disadvantage because they will not have had the same instruction as other students. More for everyone to think about. I will be discussing the matter further with Dr. Sheehan and Dr. Costello at today's Elementary Principals' meeting.
6. Don't forget to turn in your pledge card for the UNCF drive. The current total is $740.00. Remember that the drive ends May 21, 2010.
7. I will be off campus all day today in an Elementary Principals' meeting dealing with scheduling.
8. Remember to keep a list of students who return their Parent Surveys.
9. Congratulations are in order for Ms. Larson. Not only did she acquit herself well before the senators, Linda Garrou included, but also was taken to meet Governor Perdue. Great job representing our teachers, Speas, and WS/FCS!
10. Fourth Grade is off campus today in Hiddenite.

I. General Information:
Retest scores COUNT in performance composites for ABC's and AYP. The state takes the original or the restest, whichever is higher. Retests DO NOT COUNT in growth under the ABC's. Only the original score is used.
There will be no growth component for Grade 3 this year since there was no pretest.
EOG Science in grade 5 counts in the performance composite for ABC's but not in AYP.

AS soon as I get a clarification I will put out an e-mail to everyone spelling out the changes from what I reviewed with you. This threw me for a loop and can have a positive impact on our financial situation or a negative impact depending on what I find out. Hang with me.

Students are to give them to their parents for review and return them if corrections need to be made. There are places where they can put their corrections. These indicate where the bus stop will be for the next year. If students don't bring back changes, they will be assigned to the stop listed and it will not be able to be changed until mid-September. It pays to take care of this now. The letters contain both English and Spanish translations.

Today's would be a very good one to sit in on as SIT struggles to determine our structure for next year and how to allocate funding and personnel for 2010-11. As a result, this meeting may run longer than normal.

I am asking teachers who use this bathroom to go in both the Boys and Girls bathrooms before their students use them to check for any problems. 6. Don't forget to turn in your pledge card for the UNCF drive. The current total is $720.00. Remember that the drive ends May 21, 2010.
7. Review Conferences for today are:
8. The power will be shut off to the back building beginning at 2:30 PM so that they can move the electrical panel. It should be off for about an hour. Please be sure to save all your work prior to that time or you may use it. I would encourage you to log off and shut down your computers prior to 2:30.
9. The WS/FCS transfer fair is today at Parkland High School from 4:30-6:00. Those individuals who indicated they would like to transfer are welcome to attend and meet with rpincipals looking to fill vacancies. It is also valuable to get your name out there in case openings arise. Yesterday I spoke with James Lucas and he gave me the band that surplus teachers would be drawn from. Part-time teachers are not in the pool to be considered as surplus due to the fact that they work on a year to year contract. Remember thast being declared surplus means that you you must be placed in an existing position position before anyone can be hired from the outside. It also means that some individuals who are not declared surplus will wind up teaching at a different grade level.
10. Remember to review data in your PLC meetings as we work to complete our needs assessment for our Prioritized Title-1 Plan. With the budget in turmoil our decisions about which programs and personnel to fun with Title-1 money become even more critical.
11. Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal.
Albert Camus (1913 - 1960)
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
Noel Coward (1899 - 1973)
Acting is the most minor of gifts and not a very high-class way to earn a living. After all, Shirley Temple could do it at the age of four.
Katharine Hepburn (1907 - 2003)
I think it is good that books still exist, but they do make me sleepy.
Frank Zappa (1940 - 1993)
