It funds college scholarships for students who then come back and teach in our system. This not only benefits the student but also our system. The UNCF is a major force in scholarship assistance at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Please consider making a donation to this worthwhile organization. "Some people work hard to make sure their tasks are done and some people don't. It would seem that admin would notice these discrepancies and do something about it."
The purpose of the BLOG is to improve communication and support the work that takes place here. I would caution individuals from passing judgment on others and their work performance since the only individuals who are aware of the all the conditions that surround a given employee's situation are Ms. Powell and me. No one else is aware of the evaluations individuals have received; which individuals are working under action plans or plans of assistance; and which may be recommended to be administratively moved between schools at the end of the year. Anonymous comments of a general nature are rarely effective in that they are deliberately vague which hampers any follow-up efforts. Comments of a constructive nature that reference specific issues are always welcome.

12. Some classified staff members have expressed concern about getting their time sheets turned in to the office by the deadline. All classified staff members are to fill out their time sheets on a daily basis. They should access the sheet when they arrive and log their arrival time. They should then access it again at the end of the day and enter their departure time. This is not a Speas expectation. This comes from Dr. Martin and Kerry Crutchfield.
14. Major congratulations and many thanks go out to Ms. Clodfelter, Ms. Bushey Ms. Fussell and everyone else who helped out with the wonderful volunteer luncheon. What a great way to say "Thank You" to the many dedicated volunteers who give their time to help our students. You are all to be commended. (See the comment below)

Technology 2008-2009 Application Post
This school year has seen the implementation of this blog for the purpose improving communication between and among staff members at Speas Elementary school. The flexibility of the blog has greatly reduced the usage of e-mail for communication and has allowed staff members to comment on items found in the bog. This function has given staff members to choice of being identified in their comments or to comment anonymously. The entire staff has then had the benefit of being able to read comments deepen their own understanding of an issue.
While the blog has been very functional, the true impact of these technology workshops has been in what I see daily when I go into classrooms. Technology has moved from an add on in lessons to the vehicle for orchestrating student learning. Not a day goes by that I don't see SmartBoards in use, Photo Story presentations, and web-based content and delivery systems in use with classes or entire grade levels. Teachers have researched many different web-sites and found and enormous amount of exciting and engaging material to stir student interest and help deliver content. Student and experienced teachers alike have adapted technology to their disciplines. It is in used continuously in our ESL classes. It has been merged with our focus on Marzano's High Yield Teaching Strategies creating lessons that foster and employ graphic organizers; understanding similarities and differences; and aided in unique ways of summarizing or note taking.
Good teachers have enhanced their existing skills and developed new ones during the course of the year. There is an excitement around its use as a tool in the classroom. Classes without Smart Boards have asked repeatedly when they will be receiving theirs. All this has come about as a result of learning what was available and how it could be used to benefit children.

13. With all the concern about Swine Flu, I have taken the following from the Centers for Disease Control web site.
What You Can Do to Stay Healthy
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
4. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
5. If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
14. Please keep Ms. Fletcher and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Her mother was hospitalized last evening and will be undergoing tests today. Ms. Fletcher will be out today. Also keep Ms. Pfitzner and her family in your prayers. Her husband was involved in the layoffs at Hanes yesterday.
15. I have forwarded an e-mail to everyone this morning from Kerry Crutchfield. It is the latest information from WS/FCS on our plans regarding the Governor's executive order reducing the pay for all state workers by 0.5%. Please read it carefully and if you have questions please let me know so that I can try to find answers for you. This is a confusing time for everyone and we want to insure that everyone understands the Governor's action and how it may effect them.
16. A comment was placed on this post yesterday reporting that there were no paper towels in the 4/5 bathroom all day. Any time you discover a problem, please contact the office immediately so that it can be dealt with. I have the custodians checking the bathrooms during the day but should supplies be exhausted before they check it, we need to know so that students and staff have what is needed in order to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. If you wish to view the comment, please click on the word "comments" at the bottom of the post.
