9. The tentative date to move into the pod is March 27. We may be able to move before that time. As a result, teachers in rooms 21-28 should be going through their cabinets and getting rid of items that haven't been used recently. Storage will be at a premium to say the least. Grades 4 and 5 will move into the pod along with Ms. Smutek. We will be placing art on a cart for the remainder of the 09-10 school year from the move in date, March 27, until the close of school in June. Any teachers in need of boxes or other packing materials should contact the office. Teachers in rooms 9-20 should also be looking at what is in their cabinets and preparing for their move on June 10. These teachers will need to have everything packed by that time so workers from the warehouse can move it into storage trailers for the summer. Work is set to begin on phase two, the remainder of the back building, on June 13. The entire back building will be ready to move back into by August 15.

10. Jerry Bryant, Barbara's husband, serves on a committee with the Knights of Columbus that distributes grants to school for worthy causes. He has asked if we would be interested in seeking one of these grants from their current cycle. Grants are usually in the $250-$500 range. If you have an idea that we could submit, please let me know by return e-mail.

13. There is now only one way to get to the playground and that is to walk on the parking lot. There are no other viable options when going or returning. Please be mindful of cars lining up for dismissal. You may wish to consider changing the time of your PE/Recess on the playground if you wish to avoid the cars. Please keep all children outside the fence. Do not enter into the fenced in area via the two holes for the track. All children and staff should be outside the fenced in area at all times. Thanks fior your cooperation. (Immediately after writing this I received an e-mail from the construction company requesting everyone to stay out of the fenced in area and off of the playground equipment. According to the e-mail there were several classes inside the construction fence and playing on the playground equipment. The playground equipment is off limits until it is moved, reinstalled and inspected by the city.)

14. We had 9 tutors last night and two children. I sent the tutoes on at 6:30 and kep the students. Then a third student showed up around 7:00. I am open to any ideas you might have in order to boost attendance. The tutors will not continue to come unless there are students to work with. How can we shake up parents and students to get here for this assistance? Just drop me an e-mail with your idea. It has been suggested that we offer an incentive. Any ideas on what might work?

*We are asking for complete staff participation in the month of December with Dollar Dress Down Days. All of the funds in December including the $236.00 we made in November goes toward the two holiday families we have this year. Our families this year consist of the following: Family One: Two kids and a mom; Family Two: Three kids, a mom, and a dad. We usually try to purchase three toys a piece, clothing, food, and coats if needed. We have one store staff partnering with us to provide things for both families. Please encourage all of your students to participate in dollar dress down as well. It's amazing the joy another person will receive during the holidays because of your support and participation. Thank you in advance for supporting this effort.

* Also, we will not have Coffee Friday this week but in lieu of the coffee we would appreciate the two dollar donation to be used for the holiday families to purchase clothes, books, toys, etc... All donations can be given to Mrs. Bushey. All people who donate on Friday morning will be given their choice of a free muffin.

6. The December evaluation of computers left on throughout the WS/FCS found 904 which had not been turned off. Two of those were found at Speas. According to Doctor Martin, schools will be held financially responsible for these oversights beginning with the January evaluation. At it's next meeting SIT will determine whether we will pay the fines out of instructional monies or hold individuals responsible. Simply stated, turn off all computers, desktop and laptop, before you leave at the end of the day. Place this statement prominently in your sub plans.

7. Make sure that you have updated your web page by 12/11.

7.8. Due to the Media Center's upcoming switch to the Destiny program to catalog and circulate materials, no one is to use the old OPAC system. Accessing the library computer database (Online Public Access Catalog) after Nov. 24 could cause the data to become corrupt. Teachers/students should not use the OPAC icon either in the media center or from other computers. Mrs. Childers will be the only one able to check books in or out. Students or staff should not drop books off in the library if Mrs. Childers is not there, and Mrs. Childers must check books out herself. In order to check out a book, a student must have one to exchange during the transition time, which may be until after the Holidays.

8. If you have not gone on-line and filled out your Criminal Background Check form, you have until December 14.

5. North Carolina Teacher Academy is now offering on-line courses for professional development for public school teachers across the state. Registration will begin in mid-November with classes starting in January 2010. Classes will last 10 weeks and require 20 contact hours for a total of 2.0 CEU's. To find out more and to register, log on to: http://www.teacheracademy.org/

6. Last Wednesday, the construction fencing was installed to delineate the construction area for safety and security reasons. In its current form we will be able to maintain the same car rider dismissal pattern. We will do so until we are required to change. Access to the playground should be through the building using the gym doors and front doors. Once you exit the doors, please proceed along the construction fencing toward the tennis courts until your students can access the playground. All students and staff are to stay outside the construction fencing which means they will not be able to use the playground equipment. I realize this is an inconvenience but it is for the safety of the children. Please be vigilant, nothing attracts young boys like construction equipment in action. All construction workers have been directed not to talk with students or staff in order to prevent problems.

FIRE/EMERGENCY EXIT:
Those clsses that use the double doors by the Art room as their emergency exit should continue to do so. Exit the doors, turn right and follow the construction fencing toward Polo Rd. Enter back into the building at the double gym doors. Proceed to the double doors where we dismiss car riders and exit along the construction fence all the way to the playground. No other exits should be effected by the construction fencing.

7. If you would like me to read any of the versions of the Night Before Christmas, please schedule them now before the holidays fill up everything. Ms. Taylor gave me a new version last Monday, The Pirate Night Before Christmas.

8. Our Media Center is getting ready to switch to the Destiny program to catalog and circulate materials. The following information is from Ms. Childres regarding this transition:

No one is to use the OPAC after Tuesday, Nov. 24, as we begin to make the transition to Destiny. Accessing the library computer database (Online Public Access Catalog) after Nov. 24 could cause the data to become corrupt. Teachers/students should not use the OPAC icon either in the media center or from other computers.

Also, after Nov. 24, normal circulation will be down, and Mrs. Childers will be the only one able to check books in or out. Students or staff should not drop books off in the library if Mrs. Childers is not there, and Mrs. Childers must check books out herself. In order to check out a book, a student must have one to exchange during the transition time, which may be until after the December holidays. Please inform students of this policy. I attend Destiny training on Dec. 14. I will have a sub to teach classes that day, but we will NOT have check out that day, either with my classes or open checkout. Please do not send students to the media center to check out books that day, and do not let the students drop off books, as we will have no way of knowing who brought them. Thanks for your patience.

9. The following is an important message for all WS/FCS Employees. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
As we stated in our informational e-mail this past Friday, November 20th, we are requiring all employees to sign an updated Criminal Background Check Release Form. Here is the link to the on-line form:

http://intranet.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Public.nsf/BGMenu?OpenForm

The deadline for completing the form is 4:30 PM, December 14, 2009. You will see two links on this web page. If you have a WS/FCS e-mail account, use the first link. The user ID and password to use are the ones you use to access Lotus I-notes when accessing e-mail from home. Employees without e-mail accounts but with access to a computer at work or home can use the second link on this web page.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to reassure our constituents that our schools are safe places for our students, staff and parents.

10. Ms. Bushey and the student council Holiday Door Committee will be judging doors on Friday, December 4th in the afternoon.

11. In case you missed this last Tuesday:

Congratulations to the Speas staff for reaching 110.22% of the school's United Way goal! Exceeding your goal is truly commendable. Hats off to you for your generous giving which will make a positive difference in addressing needs in our community ! - Toni Bigham

12. Now we being the anticipation and crush of the holidays. It is our job to keep our students interested and excited about school while everything else is swirling around them. There is much to do curriculum-wise during the next three weeks. Everyones' nerves get a little frazzled during the holiday season. Well-planned, exciting hands-on lessons help to reduce discipline issues and keep students engaged.

13. We have always posted our SIT minutes on the shared volume for staff to review. A new state law requires that all SIT Minutes be posted on the school's web site for parents and the general public to review. Beginning with today's meeting. The secretary will no longer post minutes on the shared volume. Instead, these minutes will be sent to our tech facilitator, Ms. C. Smith and she will post them on our school web site.

14. Since we are in the second quarter now, please remember that, at minimum, all teacher web-pages are to be updated on a quarterly basis.

8. We are still collecting social dues for the 2009-2010 school year. If you have not paid, please see Ms. Johnson.

9. Regarding my discussion of instructional times with Dr. Sheehan, she realizes that the reality of a schedule includes transition times, bathroom issues, arrival and departure preparedness, bus departures and many other intangibles. We were shown a schedule that provided 90-90-60-30-30 at the Equity+ meeting yesterday. When I asked the school about transitions they said they probably lost 20 minutes or more of instructional time due to these issues. They were not written into the schedule however.

10. Today is an early release day for classified staff. Teacher assistants, please leave at 2:45. All other classified staff members should leave an hour earlier than their normal time.

8. We are still collecting social dues for the 2009-2010 school year. If you have not paid, please see Ms. Johnson.

9. I had a long talk with Dr. Meg Sheehan, the assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and she realizes the difficulty of fitting everything in a 90-90-60-30-30 schedule into a day/week. It is obvious that a lot of things have to be integrated and therefore do not show up as discrete times in a schedule.

10. We have received an allocation of $32,621.00 of additional Title-1 funding. Our plan to use this money must be turned in by 12/7 and would be preferred by 12/01. We must propose 3-5 projects that will work to ensure that we will make AYP this year and exit from school improvement. This could be tutoring for all grade levels; supplies and/or equipment; special programs; staff-development for educators; programs to increase parental involvement; or other ideas that can be defended as research based methodologies with a proven history of improving student achievement. Please convey your ideas to your SIT representatives so we can formulate our plan in order to meet the deadlines established by Title-1.

11. Today and tomorrow are early release days for classified staff. Teacher assistants, please leave both days at 2:45. All other classified staff members should leave an hour earlier tomorrow. This means that the building will close tomorrow at 5:00 PM. I will remain with the magnet bus students and Mr. Hart until they leave around 5:30 PM.

12. I will be off-campus this afternoon at an Equity+ Principals' meeting at Kimberly Park. Ms. Powell and Ms. Fletcher are out today. Please keep this in mind when you need office assistance.

12. We have found several employees spending time on Facebook instead of working. Please understand that there may be back ways into Facebook or you may be able to access it directly because it has not been blocked by the system's filter for some reason. At no time during the work day, however, is any employee to be on any social networking site like Facebook, My Space or Twitter. I hope this is advice sufficient to bring this practice to an end. Yes, we have spoken with the individual(s) who were caught, but I fear the practice is more widespread hence the reason for this post.

* The holiday door contest is quickly approaching so don't forget to start working on your door ideas.* This year we will be collecting pennies for the Samaritan Ministries. We chose a local organization, because we wanted to help a group that at some time or another has provided services for our students. The campaign will begin on Monday, November 23, 2009 - Friday, December 5, 2009. We will supply each class with a jar label to be placed on a jar that you display in your classroom. We do not have to count the pennies before we turn them in, which makes the collection process easier. Each day during the campaign there will be penny trivia on the morning broadcast. Our goal is to collect 50 lbs. of change that would provide 50 meals and five nights of shelter. The student council kids will be visiting the Samaritan Ministries on Thursday, November 19, 2009 during the school day. After their visit they will need to be allowed to speak to your class on Friday, November 20, 2009 for five to ten minutes to share with their classmates the need for the Samaritan Ministries.

8. We are still collecting social dues for the 2009-2010 school year. The Social Committee does not serve to collect money but they must collect money in order to serve. We need everyone' support in order to be able to respond when there is a need. Often there is ill will when an individual is not recognized by the staff when, in reality, they haven't paid to support the Social Committee which is charged with that recognition. Step up to the plate if you haven't paid your dues and take care of that omission today. We appreciate your support. Ms. Jonson will work with you anyway you wish to pay it.

6. Since next week is a short week, there is no need to turn in lesson plans or to do a newsletter.

7. Student Council Items:

* The holiday door contest is quickly approaching so don't forget to start working on your door ideas.

* This year we will be collecting pennies for the Samaritan Ministries.

9. There are recycling bins in the teachers' lounge. These are used to recycle paper. Please refrain from placing trash in them. Many individuals have thrown paper towels, plastic, and garbage in them. When this happens we have to clean them out before we can recycle the paper. Thanks for your cooperation.

10. It has been proposed that we move the Marzano staff-development from Tuesday, November 24 to Monday, November 23 in order to facilitate certified staff members leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday. Please click on the link and cast your vote in this matter. Votes will be tallied at 12:00 and the result announced in tomorrow's AM Announcements.

11. Teachers in grades 2-5, please contact two parents about bringing their children to A's and Bees tutoring tonight. The personal invitation makes a big difference. Remind you students as well and have them bring their homework with them.

12. Some weasel took the cork out of my lunch.
W. C. Fields (1880 - 1946)

They certainly give very strange names to diseases.
Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)

No one who cannot rejoice in the discovery of his own mistakes deserves to be called a scholar.
Donald Foster

The will to be stupid is a very powerful force, but there are always alternatives.
